Heidelberg residents warned of scammers posing as municipal officials

Residents are urged to stay alert as fraudsters posing as municipal workers attempt to extort money, with officials advising strict verification before granting access to homes.

Residents in Heidelberg and surrounding areas have been warned to remain vigilant amid reports of scammers posing as municipal employees and service providers to extort money.

The Lesedi Local Municipality has issued a public notice urging community members to exercise caution when approached at their homes by individuals claiming to represent the municipality or its contractors.

According to the municipality, legitimate employees and authorised service providers are required to follow strict identification procedures.

Officials should present valid identification bearing the municipal logo, wear reflective clothing with clearly visible name tags, and travel in properly branded vehicles.

Municipal spokesperson Katleho Seaga said residents must take extra precautions to avoid falling victim to fraud.

“We are urging all residents to remain cautious and not to engage with anyone who cannot properly identify themselves as municipal officials or authorised service providers. No legitimate employee will request money or favours in exchange for services. If there is any doubt, residents should immediately contact the municipality to verify before granting access to their homes,” he said.

Residents can confirm the identity of officials by calling the Credit Control line on 016 466 2044 or the municipal call centre on 016 466 1901.
