Runners and families celebrate sport and community at Lesedi Easter Marathon

The Lesedi Easter Marathon returned to Heidelberg on April 6, attracting competitive runners, social athletes, and families for a day of scenic routes, festive fun, and community spirit.

The Lesedi Easter Marathon made a vibrant comeback on April 6, as runners and spectators flocked to the Heidelberg Aerodrome for its second edition.

Hosted by the Suikerbosrand Athletics Club and supported by the Lesedi Local Municipality, the event has quickly gained popularity, drawing a mix of competitive athletes, social runners, and families eager to be part of the festivities.

Races ranged from the 1km Easter Egg dash to 5km, 10km, 21.1km, and the full 42.2km marathon, the latter serving as an official Comrades Marathon qualifier, attracting runners chasing a spot in South Africa’s iconic ultra-marathon.

The day kicked off early, with the 21.1km and 42.2km races starting at 06:00, followed by the 5km and 10km at 07:00, and the family-friendly 1km dash at 10:00.

Runners praised both the organisation and the scenic route.

“The route was challenging but beautiful. You really get to appreciate the scenery around Heidelberg while pushing yourself. It’s definitely a race I will come back to,” said Thabiso Chauke.

Zanele Khumalo said everything was well organised from start to finish.

“The support along the route kept us going, and the atmosphere at the aerodrome was incredible,” she said.

Simon Mlotshwa added, “This event is perfect for everyone, not just serious runners. It’s about community, fun and staying active. Bringing the kids for the 1km dash made it even more special.”
