Cambridge FC succumbs to Joburg City in heartbreaking 2-1 defeat
Cambridge Football Club battled hard but Joburg City walked away winners on the day.
Cambridge Football Club suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Joburg City in a Hollywood Bets League encounter.
The team travelled to the Bedfordview Greek Sporting Club for the Ekurhuleni Hollywood Bets Regional League fixture, where they were edged out in a closely contested match.
Cambridge opened the match with high intensity and tried to take control.
Bridges played a patient build-up from the back, finding spaces in the opposition defence.
Joburg City, on their part, picked up on the loose balls and put pressure on the Cambridge defence.
Cambridge managed to deal with the long balls and the ball rotation. Both teams showed tactical discipline, making no mistakes.
A lapse in concentration by Cambridge led to the first goal of the match when Joburg City pounced and put the ball into the back of the net.
Bridges responded next with an equaliser by debutant Katsande Masha with 10 minutes to go before halftime. Halftime 1-1.
The second half was delayed by 20 minutes due to threatening lightning.
The break affected Cambridge and they struggled to build momentum.
Joburg City took advantage and put constant pressure on the visiting team.
Another loss in concentration resulted in another goal for Joburg City.
Bridges tried hard to press forward but could not convert the pressure into an equaliser.
“This is a disappointing result. We were playing a team fighting for their survival, being at the bottom of the log, and needed a win to improve their standing. They are fighting to avoid relegation. Senseless mistakes cost us the win,” said Kamogelo Mothlong, Cambridge coach.
“We struggled to build momentum after a long break, which we feel had a huge impact on the team, waiting for decisions on whether the match should continue or not. Let’s hope we can bounce back at home this coming weekend,” concluded Ignatius Maphike, Cambridge FC chairperson.
