Heidelberg Soldiers Wrestling Club appeals for funding for training facility

Heidelberg’s young wrestlers are thriving. Now they need a space to call their own.

Heidelberg Soldiers Wrestling Club has made significant strides over the past year, achieving notable successes in Heidelberg and the surrounding areas.

Their wrestlers have secured multiple tournament victories and earned spots at provincial trials. The club currently holds its training sessions at Laerskool AG Visser.

“Our wrestling club has been involved in developing youth and community sport, providing structured training, discipline, and positive life skills to young people in Heidelberg and its surrounding areas.

“Wrestling has proven to be a powerful tool for youth development, offering an alternative to negative social influences while promoting physical fitness, self-discipline, and resilience,” said head coach Dewald de Wet.

The club aims to grow and establish a facility they can call their own.

At present, the wrestling club operates with limited facilities, which restrict training capacity, safety standards, and long-term growth.

“We are looking for a place to be our base that would allow us to expand access to the sport for more youth and schools in the area. It will provide a safe, permanent training environment, host local and provincial competitions and development programmes, and identify and nurture talent that can represent the province and country,” De Wet continued.

“We want to have a lasting impact on community sport development and align with national objectives of youth empowerment and sport excellence. It can also unlock other mat sports in Heidelberg like judo or taekwondo,” concluded De Wet.

To be an asset, the club needs assistance from the community – a sponsor or two and a place that the wrestlers can use as a permanent base.
