Cambridge FC battles Alberton FC to a 0-0 draw in a high-energy showdown

Cambridge FC's spirited performance earned them a hard-fought draw against fourth-placed Alberton FC.

Cambridge Football Club, based in Nigel, hosted the fourth-placed Alberton Football Club at Jim Fouché Stadium in Nigel.

The fixture, part of the Hollywoodbets Regional League, delivered a thrilling encounter for a lively crowd of spectators on the day.

Cambridge wanted to start where they left off after their 2-0 win in Tembisa and showed the same energy and hunger.

The match was a tactical affair as both teams circulated the ball to search for open spaces in the defence.

Cambridge was more dominant, played with high intensity, and looked like a different team from their previous disappointing draw.

The home team entertained their vocal supporters with football skills and attack of Alberton on the wing, winning every second ball.

The boys from Nigel failed to turn their beautiful team play into goals as the first half ended 0-0.

In the second half, both teams created clear scoring opportunities. The opportunities went begging as the score sheets remained scoreless.

Cambridge made a few tactical changes on the wing and the striker positions, which sparked more life and intensity in their attack.

More opportunities presented themselves, but the ball could not find the back of the net.

Alberton could have sealed the match with a late chance that was saved by the experienced goalkeeper, German Motaung to keep the score at 0-0.

The match ended in a draw, with the away team having the advantage of getting a point in Nigel.

Ignatius Maphike, Cambridge chairperson, said, “We have financial challenges and internal issues with coaches who resigned. I had to save the club that is so dear to our community.

“The team’s attitude was different and the energy electrifying. We need to help the boys believe in themselves, hence this top performance today. It’s just that the Football Gods were not with us in front of the goal.

“I’m happy and with the assistance from our long-time club servant and coach, Dennis Mestana, who took the bull by the horns to instil technical discipline in the squad.

“We hope we can replicate the same performance in Nigel next week when we host Benoni City, currently number one on the log.
“We thank the community of Nigel for the amazing support. Town was good to us”.
