Heidelberg Hospital staff promote wellness with Obesity Awareness hike

A hiking initiative at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve encouraged Heidelberg Hospital staff to embrace healthier lifestyles through exercise, nutrition education and wellness awareness.

Staff members from Heidelberg Hospital took part in a hiking for obesity awareness event at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve on March 13, promoting healthy living through physical activity and nutrition education.

The initiative was organised by the hospital’s Therapeutic Unit and led by the dietitians as part of ongoing efforts to encourage staff to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The programme aimed to highlight the importance of regular exercise and balanced nutrition in preventing obesity and improving overall well-being.

During the event, staff members embarked on a refreshing hike through the scenic reserve, enjoying the natural surroundings while taking part in discussions about the benefits of staying active.

The relaxed outdoor setting also provided an opportunity for staff members to connect while reflecting on their own health and lifestyle habits.

Healthy refreshments, including fresh fruit and water, were provided to participants, reinforcing the message of maintaining a balanced diet and staying properly hydrated.

Medical doctor Lucky Mahlake described the experience as both enjoyable and motivating.

“This was truly a refreshing and exhilarating experience for everyone who took part. Being outdoors in such a beautiful environment allowed us to step away from our daily routines and focus on our own health and wellbeing,” he said.

“The hike reminded us that physical activity does not always have to be complicated. Something as simple as walking in nature can make a big difference to our overall health. It also gave us time to reflect on how important it is to maintain a healthy balance between work, exercise and proper nutrition,” he added.

Finance manager Sindile Mashele said the event was not only enjoyable but also informative, as it reinforced key principles of healthy eating.

“The session was very insightful and reminded us about the small but important choices we make every day when it comes to our diet.

“We were encouraged to practice portion control, choose foods that are lower in fat, include more fibre in our meals and make fruits a regular part of our snacks. We were also reminded about the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day.

“These are simple habits, but they play a big role in maintaining good health and preventing lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity,” she said.
