Cambridge drop crucial points after 3-3 draw with Benoni Northerns
Cambridge were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw away to Benoni Northerns after letting a 3-1 second-half lead slip, a result that dents their push for a playoff spot with 12 matches remaining in the season.
Cambridge dropped valuable points in their pursuit of a playoff place after playing to a 3-3 draw against Benoni Northerns in a second-round league fixture in Benoni.
The Nigel-based side needed a win to remain within reach of the log leaders, but despite a strong second-half performance, they were unable to hold onto a two-goal advantage.
Northerns made an immediate impact, opening the scoring within the first three minutes after capitalising on a defensive lapse.
Cambridge responded by gradually asserting control, dominating possession and creating opportunities, but were unable to find the equaliser before halftime and trailed 1-0 at the break.
The visitors returned from the interval with renewed urgency and were rewarded early in the second half when Mvelo Pompi finished off a well-constructed move to level matters. Cambridge continued to apply pressure and took the lead in the 66th minute through defender Teboho Malatji, who converted to make it 2-1.

Their dominance was further reflected on the scoreboard when Lehlohonolo Motaung extended the lead to 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining, placing the Nigel side in a commanding position.
However, the closing stages proved costly. Northerns reduced the deficit following a defensive error before capitalising on sustained pressure and long balls to score a late equaliser, ensuring the match ended 3-3.
The result represents a missed opportunity for Cambridge, who had controlled large portions of the match but failed to maintain their defensive structure when it mattered most.
Club chairperson Ignatius Maphike also expressed concern over the result.

“It is very disappointing because these are the types of matches where we should be collecting maximum points, especially when we are in such a strong position late in the game.
“We have now made the road ahead much more difficult for ourselves, and we will need to rely on consistency and possibly other results going in our favour. However, we remain committed as a club and will continue to fight until the end of the season,” he said.
