Terrence Ndlhovu (40) lost his life after he and Jabulane Mbele (47) were hit by a hail of bullets in a drive-by shooting on July 30.

Ndlhovu (better known as ‘Section’) was the chairman of the Heidelberg District Taxi Association and Mbele the deputy secretary. The men had just left a meeting at Heidelberg Taxi Rank and were on their way home when they were attacked.

According to Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate (spokesperson: Ekurhuleni East Cluster), the incident happened between 16:00 and 17:00 in Lekota Street. Ndlhovu was on his way to drop Mbele off when a white Toyota Corolla overtook his BMW and shots were fired in their direction.

Ndlhovu was hit and lost control of the vehicle before it hit a tree next to the road. The assailants came back and shot both occupants at close range. Ndlhovu suffered five shots and later died in hospital while Mbele was hit three times and are still being treated in hospital.

The executive committee of the Heidelberg District Taxi Association was shocked by the incident and said Ndlhovu joined the association when he was a young man. They voiced the hope that the perpetrators would be arrested soon.
Ndlhovu’s family said he was a good leader, husband and father and the pillar of their family.

“My brother was not a violent person. He always had sympathy with other people and tried to lend a helping hand wherever he could. Everyone remembers him as a friendly person. He was dedicated and passionate about his community and worked hard through the taxi association to better the lives of his people,” his sister Nompumelelo said.

Ndlhovu was born in Heidelberg and matriculated at Kgoro Ya Thuto Secondary School. A memorial service will be held at the Old Ratanda Hall today (August 7) at 12:00, followed by his funeral service on August 8 at 08:00 at the Ratanda Multipurpose Hall.

He leaves behind his wife Molebogeng, his mother, father, sister and children.

Captain Tshilate said police are investigating a charge of murder and one of attempted murder. The motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage and police ask the assistance of the public to come forward with any information which will be treated as highly confidential.
