The following sentences were passed recently in the Ermelo District Court.
On 28 November Velaphi Absalom Motha (26) was found guilty of housebreaking with intent to rape and rape. He was also found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Motha was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on the first count and 15 years’ imprisonment on the second count. The court ordered five years of the first sentence to be served concurrently with the second sentence. The offences were committed in December last year.
Also on 28 November, 18-year-old Mbedkeni Tammy Mathebula was found guilty of assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm and murder. Mathebula was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on the first count and five years’ imprisonment on the murder charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
In the same case, Central John Mathebula was also found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. The two committed the offence in Lothair on 1 December last year.
In all of the above cases the offenders were found unfit to possess a firearm.
