New manager welcomed

New Appointments at Ermelo Correctional Centre.

The new manager at Ermelo Correctional Centre, Mr Johanes D. Shongwe, was warmly welcomed by staff and management at the centre recently. Mr Shongwe brings with him 35 years worth of experience in various key positions within the Department of Correctional Services in a work history that started in Witbank (eMalahleni) in 1980.

His short-term goals include assisting with the smooth integration of offenders into the community after having served their sentences.

One of his long-term goals is seeing improvement in the number of ex-offenders getting jobs after being released with the various skills they learn at the centre.

Mr Shongwe also said that he is passionate about self-improvement and members up-skilling themselves.

“I don’t want a situation in my team where offenders are more educated than the officials. It’s important for members to further their studies. This also applies to offenders. They must make good use of the education opportunities the centre provides.”

The Ermelo centre also welcomed two officials, Mr Vincent S. Malatsi and Dalamafa J. Manana.

Mr Malatsi is the Assistant Head of Prison and the centre coordinator for operational support. Mr Manana has 27 years’ experience, including other positions such as senior correctional officer and head of community corrections.

Mr Manana was also promoted to senior correctional officer where he is the case management supervisor. He joined the department in 1987 and is a Correctional Service Management Diploma graduate from Unisa with intentions to further his studies with a BTech degree.
