Rail company and college sign MoU

The signing of the MoU comes after the community and ANCYL initiated the talks between the rail company and the college

Deputy Minister of Public Enterprise Bulelani Magwanishe oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise a partnership between Transnet Engineering and the Gert Sibande Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College recently at the Ermelo Campus.

The signing of the MoU comes after the community and the ANCYL initiated the talks between the Ermelo depot of Transnet and the College. The agreement will see academically deserving students, who also meet the company’s qualifying criteria, being absorbed by the rail company into its engineering fold for workplace-based training opportunities with possible employment opportunities.

Chief Executive of Transnet Engineering Mr Thamsanqa Jiyane said this opportunity opens up doors to students that require practical exposure as a prerequisite for certification as well as application for a trade test in line with the Skills Development Act.

“Through this MoU, Transnet will ensure that the College lecturers also get an opportunity to keep up to date with relevant and latest technological, engineering and commercial activities in the industry. Transnet will contribute towards ensuring the college curriculum is current, relevant and up to date,” said Mr Jiyane.

Mr Magwanishe said this was an all important event to oversee the signing of the MoU between the college and Transnet as it opens up doors to a wealth of opportunities for the students.

“It is important for the students to take full advantage of this opportunity as it unlocks doors to other opportunities. It is equally important to consider and look beyond Transnet Ermelo for employment opportunities. There are also other sectors of Transnet that need to be explored, such as the Port

Terminals and Mineral Bulk Centre to name a few. It is also important to note that not everyone will get the opportunity. Some of you must consider entrepreneurial opportunities where, with the skills and knowledge you acquired at the college, you are able to set up your own businesses where you’ll end up creating employment opportunities for others,”said Mr Magwanishe.

Also present at the event, were beneficiaries from Transnet, Denel Aviation and SAFCOL Forestry who also had an opportunity to address the students. They all agreed that such opportunities are rare and must be grasped with both hands.
Students from the college also had an opportunity to entertain the crowd with their talent for poetry and musical items.
