Expanded Public Works Programme of the Department of Environmental Affairs, Working on Fire has suppressed 10 veld and forestry fires from the week of 22 June to yesterday.
These fires were at the Highveld, Lowveld and the Escarpment in Mpumalanga. Aerial support including the choppers, spotters, bombers and fire fighters were used to suppress these fires.
Mpumalanga WoF General Manager, Martin Bolton pleaded with the community not to start fires that could lead to the unnecessary loss of properties, human lives and live stock.
“The community must request burning permits from their local Fire Protection Association, report wild fires immediately before it causes damages,”said Bolton.
The programme is armed with 654 trained fire fighters stationed in 23 bases across the province.
