Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison conducted the Anti Stock Theft Awareness campaign in Nkomazi where a number of butcheries owners were found to have violated meat safety regulations.
A number of butcheries were found selling meat that didn’t have the approval stamp by relevant authorities and some shops sold expired food.
During the three days campaign, it was also discovered that most butchery owners in the area did not use accredited abattoirs for slaughtering of livestock. Some were caught slaughtering cattle under the trees and garages while other butcheries did not comply with the hygienic standards as determined by the Department of Health.
Meat to the value of R40 000 was seized.
