Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Vusi Shongwe has applauded traffic officers for their commitment to curbing road crashes and lawlessness on the roads.
Shongwe commended the traffic officers after the presentation of this year’s Easter Road Safety Statistics which showed a decrease compared to last year’s Easters on road crashes and fatalities between 24 and 28 March 2016.
This year the province recorded 84 crashes, 25 people died including six pedestrians, while last year 97 crashes were recorded, 27 people died.
Last year 151 people were injured this year while 199 were injured last year.
MEC Shongwe said although the province managed to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities, road deaths remain a concern.
“One death is one too many, we cannot relax,”said Shongwe.
23045 vehicles were stopped in different parts of the province and 3865 fines were issued to motorists, 187 were arrested for drunk driving and four for excessive speeding and un-roadworthy vehicles were impounded.
