Dumping site a health hazard
"Community members are also worsening the situation because they scavenge in the area"
The Carolina dumping site has caused concern to residents living across the road as most of the dirt is blown to their yards and the stench poses a health hazard. However, some of the people scavenging there say they make money from what they gather there, such as tins and bottles which they sell for recycling.
They do, however, concede that this is an eye-sore for motorists driving by.
Municipal spokesman Mr David Nhlabathi said the municipality is working on a plan to deal with all dumping area, he also cautioned that members of the community must also refrain from vandalising the area.
“Community members are also worsening the situation because they scavenge in the area opening all the dirt looking for items to recycle which we understand but then they live a mess behind. The municipality has had to fence the area on several occasions because people steal the fence,”explained Mr Nhlabathi.
