The on-going water outage in Thusi Village has forced residents to fetch water for their daily needs from alternative sources.
Some residents have resorted to scooping water from a leaking pipeline next to the busy N11 road near the Ermelo Airfield. Women and children run the risk of being run over by speeding vehicles, as they cross the road with heavy water-filled containers carried on their heads.
“We know it’s risky, but what else can we do? The water supply is not consistent and now we have been completely without water for more than two weeks,” said a woman before scurrying back across the road with a heavy container in the one hand and holding the hand of a small child who was also carrying a five litre bottle of water.
