The Mpumalanga Office of the Premier hosted Women’s Month celebrations on Saturday at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Wesselton.
Government used the month to fight the abuse of women and also to highlight the progress it has made in promoting women’s issues with this year celebrated under the theme “The Year of OR Tambo: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward.”
Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa, Mr M.S. Nkosi, opened the festivities with a word of welcome to all in attendance.
Cultural performances kept the crowd entertained while the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa and House of Traditional Leaders gave messages of support.
The keynote address, given by the MEC for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Norah Mahlangu, addressed various issues women face daily.
She highlighted issues of women still struggling to find work, there being only 38.2 per cent women in senior management of the public sector and too many women still silent victims of gender-based violence.
She added this year’s Women’s Month takes place against a backdrop of a poor performing global economy with women the most affected by the economic decline and bearing the brunt of its negative economic and social effects.
Social relief items were handed out to various organisations, with learners from New Ermelo Combined School receiving gift packs as a token of appreciation for reading the OR Tambo biography.
The event concluded with numerous cultural performances with various government departments like the Department of Home Affairs and Sassa rendering services to the people on the day.
