South African Communist Party forces municipality to close its doors during protest

With no officials from the municipality coming to address the protesting crowd, the situation became violent and ended up with the group breaking the municipal doors.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) held a sit down in front of the Msukaligwa Municipal offices to protest over land on Monday, 13 August.

The party also wanted the chief whip of the Msukaligwa council, Ms Phumzile Mashiane, to be removed from office.

According to Mzwandile Zulu, the SACP sub-district convener, land should be given equally to all people and they have found that certain members of their party have been left off the lists of people destined to receive stands in the region.

The party also questioned why Ms Mashiane has involved herself with the compiling of lists of people when it is not in her job description.

The sit down came as the party led various community members to invade land on the Rietspruit Farm on the outskirts of Ermelo.

The party protested until noon on Monday, forcing the municipality to close its doors and to not render services to the public.

With no officials from the municipality coming to address the protesting crowd, the situation turned violent and the group broke down the municipal doors.

The municipal spokesman, Mr Mandla Zwane, finally addressed the crowd and accepted a memorandum from the SACP.

In the memorandum, the party wants the lists of people who were going to get stands to be revoked and councillors excluded from the compiling of the lists.

The party gave the municipality seven working days to respond.
