Residents of Mazakhele in Wesselton voiced their dissatisfaction on 19 September after the communal toilets were blown away by strong winds on Tuesday, 18 September.
The residents burned tyres and blocked the road near Qambekile Primary School, forcing motorists to use other routes.
The situation at the informal settlement is dire with residents continuously appealing for service delivery.
As reported in the Highvelder on 23 February: “Mandela Village residents struggle with service delivery”, residents were given the land with stands marked out for low cost housing (RDP houses), but none were forthcoming. This prompted residents to build their own temporary structures.
The informal settlement is riddled with sewerage problems, deteriorating roads and illegal dumpsites, a stark contrast to the houses surrounding it that have toilets and taps.
Altogether 18 people live in the settlement that has two structures for four toilets in each corner of the settlement.
Municipal officials brought in two temporary toilets on Wednesday evening, however residents said they were fed up and service delivery problems at the settlement need to be addressed promptly.
