Residents of ward 13 and 14 in the KwaZanele township, led by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), held a peaceful march in Breyten on Friday, 28 September over the lack of service delivery in their area.
The march comes as various communities around the municipality have showed their dissatisfaction of Msukaligwa by taking to the streets.
The protesters were of the opinion that the lack of service delivery has been left unattended for far too long and the municipality must prioritize the area.
The crowd of protesters handed over a memorandum with a list of demands which included but not limited to the following:
• The municipality must stop the selling and escalating the price of electricity as it is maximising profits. The group want Eskom to provide the electricity so the community will get power straight from the source.
• All property owners in the area must be issued with their title deeds.
• The municipality must attend to the none-existent water and sewerage system in the KwaZanele township as water is dirty and sewage is running rampant in most streets of the area.
• The municipality must also allocate stands to middle-class earners in the township.
• The municipality must stop employing only African National Congress (ANC) card-carrying people and their family members.
Msukaligwa municipality’s executive mayor, Mr Joseph Mkhaliphi, accepted and signed the memorandum.
The party gave the municipality seven working days to respond to their demands.
