Mr Bonakele Majuba, MEC from the Department of Education in Mpumalanga, visited Ligbron Academy of Technology to witness their e-Learning system on 1 October.

MEC Majuba viewed live broadcast lessons from Ligbron and interacted with schools in remote areas.

He also used his visit to begin a process of using the model to intensify the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy Programmes.

Ligbron Academy of Technology introduced the Ligbron e-Learning system in 2007.

It connects learners from rural schools to audio and/or video streaming-lessons.

The Ligbron e-Learning Project has had an incredible impact on the school’s results, as well as the lives of the learners.

The project expands the horizons of learners in participating with other schools by using state of the art technology provided by Edit Microsystems.

These school sites are connected with a wireless system or internet connection that enables them to share live video lessons, meeting materials, budgets, and training material.

Teachers use the system to improve productivity and the quality of teaching and learning, especially in mathematics and science.

Using video and desktop sharing in an advanced remote collaboration platform called Bridgit, Ligbron Academy of Technology and several schools in Mpumalanga share mathematics and science lessons.

It has also won several awards over the years.

This has led to the expansion of the project to other schools around the province.
