Fernie on lockdown after protesters barricade town

The Highvelder sent media inquiries to Mr David Nthlabathi, spokesman of Chief Albert Luthli Municipality as well as Mr Tilly Madonsela, spokesman for the mayor of Chief Albert Luthuli, but no response has yet been given.

Residents of Fernie blocked roads, shut down schools and are demanding that the local municipality deal with a senior employee at the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality on 18 February.

An entire community has come to a standstill because of a municipal employee being accused of alleged corruption and nepotism.

Locals claim they’ve raised the matter twice already, but no action was taken.

A petition was signed by locals and was handed over to the municipality, the municipality said they will respond by 29 February.
