The municipality said that all proposals will be motivated and submitted on an approved form - obtainable from the municipal offices.

The Msukaligwa Municipality recently called on all residents, state departments, organisations and other stakeholders in Ermelo who have an interest in naming and renaming of streets in town.

Any individual in the Msukaligwa municipal area is entitled to propose new names for the changing of names of streets in and around Ermelo in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • Should include names of deceased persons, places, events and the environment
  • When the name of a deceased person is used, the applicant needs to show that all attempts have been made to obtain consent from his/her family.
  • Consideration should be given to names of local or historical significance.

The municipality also stated that the following needed to be avoided:

  • Offensive names
  • Cumbersome, in the sense that the name might be difficult to pronounce
  • Linguistically corrupted or modified names
  • Similarly sounding names
  •  Construed as advertising

The municipality said that all proposals will be motivated and submitted on an approved form – obtainable from the municipal offices.

Council however, will have the final say on any proposed names.

The closing date for submissions is 31 July.
