DAVEL – A furious resident, who was allegedly thrown out of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s (MLM) office on February 9, turned to Highvelder to raise his frustrations with what he said was the lack of proper help from the municipality.
According to Mr Sifiso Sibeko, he had bought two stands in Davel in 2010, on which he planned to develop a house for his family and later a community centre to serve the community.
At the time, Mr Sibeko and his wife were still working and did not have the funds to develop the property.
After a few years, they decided to retire and use their pension money to build a house for their family of six children.
They arrived at the stands in Davel and were shocked to discover a sewer pump station had been built on the property.
They immediately went to enquire at the municipality about this pump.
“The municipality has acknowledged that they built the pump station on our land,” Mr Sibeko said. He said he had urged the municipality to remove it from his land, but was informed that it would be too expensive.
He then demanded that the municipality rent the land from him so that he could use the money to build a house for his family.
“At this stage, my wife and I have no choice but for them to stay with my
parents-in-law, and I here in Ermelo.”
After numerous attempts to get some answers from the municipality, Mr Sibeko once again went to see the municipal manager on February 9.
Mr Sibeko said he had told MLM that he would not leave the building until he had received proper answers to this problem, at which stage MLM allegedly phoned security to throw Mr Sibeko out.
“It’s been almost 10 years that I’ve had this problem with the municipality, and I feel that I have been patient enough.”
