Overflowing sewage seeps into homes in Wesselton

According to Ms Thulile Zulu, the manhole has been overflowing for over two months. Enquiries have been sent to Msukaligwa Local Municipality, but nothing has been done to resolve the issue.

WESSELTON – Residents of Extension 4 are fed up with a manhole’s overflowing sewage that makes its way into their homes.

According to a Ward 9 councillor, Ms Thulile Zulu, the issue has been reported to Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) several times, but nothing has been done to resolve the issue.

“Residents have raised their concerns with me a few times. I really hope that someone from the municipality can take responsibility, because people cannot live in such conditions,” Ms Zulu said.

Residents have little alternative but to use bricks as a stepping stone to enter their homes.

One resident, Ms Khanyisile Mahlangu, alleged that her toddler once fell into the bog caused by the water inside her yard and was rescued by local residents.

“We use bricks as stepping stones into our homes. We have raised our concerns with several municipal leaders including the previous councillor, but nothing has been done. This is not a way for people to live, we live in horrible conditions,” Ms Mahlangu said.

She also added children play in the water, and the smell is a health concern to them.

Questions were sent to the Msukaligwa Municipality and Highvelder awaits response.
