Transvaal Agricultural Union says president’s new power plan is only the start

They have welcomed some ideas, but have their doubts about certain other aspects that can impede the process.

The Transvaal Agricultural Union (TAU) of South Africa says it welcomes some ideas of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s to address the country’s power crisis, but that transformation policies, if not abolished by the ruling party, will stymie progress.

“This power plan is perhaps to a small extent an attempt to restore the results of a transformation policy where the ANC, through cadre deployment, BEE, and affirmative action, has appointed people who simply do not have the skills, knowledge, and expertise necessary to do the job.

“These people are now in positions where they don’t want to or can’t do their job,” Bennie van Zyl, TAU SA’s general manager claimed.

TAU also believes that a group within Eskom is attempting to sabotage the power supplier’s efforts to deliver power solely for personal gain.

“Eskom must get its house in order. What the president had to announce was the abolition of transformation. Only expertise must play a role,” Van Zyl stated.
