Former Ermelo Transnet security employees demand their jobs back
Dlamini said they do not know why Transnet had terminated its contract with Amahle Security Company after only six months.
ERMELO – Some former Transnet security workers who had been working under Amahle Security Company went on strike at the Transnet offices on April 22 to demand their jobs back.
Phumzile Dlamini, a former security worker, said they were striking because they want to be employed by the Fidelity company, which took over from Amahle Security.
Dlamini said they do not know why Transnet had terminated its contract with Amahle Security Company after only six months.
She said Fidelity only hired back fewer than 20 people from the group that had worked for Amahle.
She insisted what was happening was not fair. She said they are struggling to get work in other towns, because the communities there don’t allow people from outside to obtain jobs when some locals don’t have any.
Dlamini added that Fidelity demands many stringent requirements, such as having firearm licences and a lot of experience, which many of them do not have.
Enock Hlatshwayo of the Transnet security office said Fidelity did hire some people from Amahle, but many of them did not have the required qualifications and they failed their entrance test.
Tinus Jansen van Vuuren, Fidelity’s branch manager, said Fidelity is doing everything possible to find a solution.
He said the issue had already been reported to the Fidelity head offices in Johannesburg, and they will take the appropriate action if they receive a response.
