Ermelo voters: Are you prepared for tomorrow’s elections?

From identification documents to ballot papers, here is a practical guide to help residents prepare for election day.

With South Africans heading to the polls tomorrow, Ermelo residents are encouraged to make sure they are prepared before heading to their voting stations.

The 2026 Local Government Elections will determine who represents residents in their respective municipal councils, including the Msukaligwa Local Municipality.

Voting stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00.

What do you need to take with you?

Voters must present one of the following identification documents:

  • A green barcoded ID book.
  • A smart ID card.
  • A valid temporary identification certificate.

Important to know

Driver’s licences, passports and photocopies of ID documents will not be accepted.

No firearms allowed

Firearms are prohibited within the boundaries of voting stations. The restriction applies to everyone, except on-duty South African Police Service members stationed there. Voters should therefore leave their firearms at home when heading to vote.

Where must you vote?

Voters may only cast their ballots at the voting station where they are registered.

Residents can confirm their voting station and registration details through the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) website at www.elections.org.za.

Alternatively, voters can send their 13-digit ID number via SMS to 32810 (at a cost of R1) or send “Hi” via WhatsApp to 0600 88 0000.

Three ballot papers for Msukaligwa voters

Residents registered in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality will receive three ballot papers:

  • Ward ballot: To elect a ward councillor to represent the ward.
  • Municipal proportional representation (PR) ballot: To vote for a political party to represent them in the Msukaligwa municipal council.
  • District PR ballot: To vote for a political party to represent them in the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

Voters must make one clear cross in the appropriate box on each ballot paper. Voting takes place in private.

What should you consider before voting?

Local government decisions have a direct impact on residents’ everyday lives. These include the provision of water and sanitation, electricity distribution, refuse removal, municipal roads and other basic services.

Before casting your vote, take time to familiarise yourself with the parties and candidates contesting in your ward and municipality, their election commitments and their track records.

Remember that your vote is your own choice.
