Gert Sibande District Municipality launches cleanest town competition

This initiative traces its roots back to 2001 when the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment initiated the Cleanest Town competition.

Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) reaffirms its commitment to fostering clean and healthy environments with the initiation of a much-anticipated annual cleanest town competition.

The inauguration of this endeavour was spearheaded by Cllr Nomkhosi Zulu, a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for community and social services. Leading the launch on behalf of the executive mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Mapulane Nkosi, Zulu emphasised the vital role this competition plays in fostering environmental consciousness and promoting the ideals of social progress and economic development.

The event, held on August 24 within the municipal offices, marked a significant step toward advancing these goals.

The competition will aid them in their preparation for the national greenest town competition, fostering a sense of national and regional pride.The multifaceted competition is set to focus on a range of vital aspects, including enhanced water management, energy efficiency, urban forestry, landscaping, beautification efforts, and active public engagement.

Highlighting their dedication to promoting positive change, GSDM has allocated prizes for the three top-performing municipalities in the competition:

  • First place: R100 000
  • Second place: R50 000
  • Third place: R25 000.

This event was designed to align with the National Waste Management Strategy, further emphasising the importance of responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.
