Sweet and talented: Debbie Smit from Ermelo creates realistic edible art

She only uses her hands and odd kitchen utensils to form her edible flowers and art.

The cake decorator and baker, Debbie Smit, has a talent for creating realistic edible art.

At the age of 16, Smit started competing with her cakes, winning her first competition with her Cindy Doll cake.

As time went by, Smit got married, took on the corporate world and gave birth to her only daughter.

Due to a disability, she had to retire. Now that only her husband is working, the household relies on one person financially, putting some strain on the family.

Her daughter and husband’s birthdays were the main motivation for her to master her cake decorating skills, to make their birthdays special.

“Now what is a birthday without a cake?”

Word got out that there was a new baker in town and it spread like wildfire.

But lockdown took a strain on her small baking business, and more and more people started their own baking business.

However, Smit’s extraordinary edible art is a talent that can’t be copied so easily.

Debbie Smit only uses her hands and odd kitchen utensils to shape and mould her edible art.

One of Smit’s most challenging cake projects was a Minion cake, which included two Minions on top of each other with a built-in Bluetooth-speaker playing “Happy Birthday to You”.

Every cake is memorable for Smit, and her favourite experience of her business is seeing her clients’ reactions the moment they see their cakes.

“I put a lot of love and care into what I do, just to see people’s faces light up with joy.” Smit said.

For her it is the most rewarding part of her cake decorating journey, and leaves her with a ‘warm feeling’.

It is very important that every element of her cakes or cupcake designs are edible.

“No leftovers,” she insisted.

She receives encouragement from her husband, Wayne, her daughter and a friend. With this tight support system and deep passion for baking, Debbie is taking the edible art world by storm.
