Ermelo community rallies against child rape
Ermelo residents and political groups protested at the Msukaligwa Municipal building against sexual violence.
ERMELO – A wave of solidarity swept through the town as Msukaligwa Local Municipality officials, political parties and community members joined forces in protest on April 4.
The protesters gathered at the civic centre, holding placards expressing their support and demanding accountability and action for Cwecwe (pseudonym).
Their unified voice demanded justice following the horrific rape of the seven-year-old, who was attacked on school grounds in the Eastern Cape. The protest mirrored nationwide marches against sexual violence.
“It is every parent’s worst fear. But today, we are not just marching for her. We are marching for every child who has been failed by a system that should protect them,” said one of the protestors.
A memorandum was also handed to the acting executive mayor, Sphiwe Ernest Ngovene, to deliver to the Department of Education.
