Ermelo resident’s public holiday turns into urgent bird rescue mission

A timely call from a friend, inviting her for a cup of coffee, led to a collaborative rescue effort.

ERMELO – What was anticipated to be a restful public holiday for local resident, Silvija Breytenbach, turned into a day of urgent rescue after she received an early morning call from concerned residents in Mooi Hawens regarding two injured sparrowhawks.

Despite the warning of a severely damaged road to the location, Breytenbach – an avid animal lover – knew she had to do something to help the injured birds.

“Well, I thought, time to crank up Ole’ Smokey Joe – those that know me know Ole’ Smokey Joe is my faithful, reliable Land Rover,” Breytenbach said.

A timely call from a friend, inviting her for a cup of coffee, led to a collaborative rescue effort.

Breytenbach explained the situation and he offered to drive her to Mooi Hawens.

Upon arriving there, the extent of the birds’ injuries became apparent.

“One beautiful sparrowhawk was believed to have collided with a vehicle, while the other one had been shot in the wing.”

Without hesitation, the decision was made to transport the injured birds to the renowned Birds of Prey sanctuary in Dullstroom, offering them the best chance of survival and rehabilitation.

The journey, however, did not end well for all. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, it was discovered that the hawk believed to have been hit by a car, had died.

The sanctuary’s employees assured the rescuers that the other bird would receive the necessary treatment and that they would provide updates on its progress.
