Breyten librarian sparks love for reading in local children

Sindy Khanyile is dedicated to empowering the children of Breyten through initiatives such as reading programmes, collaborations with schools, and her commitment to lifelong learning.

BREYTEN – Local librarian Sindy Khanyile has made it her mission to nurture a love of reading and inspire children to invest in their education.

She joined the municipality in 2001, shortly after completing a diploma in library and information studies.

“My passion for serving the community and promoting literacy led me to pursue a career in librarianship, with a focus on working directly with people,” Khanyile said.

Growing up in KwaZulu-Natal, she always loved reading and engaging with others.

She studied education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which gave her a strong foundation for working with children – but it was while volunteering at a local library that she discovered her true passion.

Since 2023, Khanyile’s work has yielded tangible results. She has initiated and managed several programmes, including book clubs that have welcomed more than 200 children.

Working in collaboration with Nal’ibali – a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) – Khanyile hosted four information sessions for parents to help them support young writers. She also arranged for children to read their stories on a local radio station.

“Building strong relationships with neighbouring schools has been a key aspect of my work, resulting in positive impacts on the community,” she said.
