Mayor visits schools during Back-to-School tour

Executive mayor Cllr Mapulane Precious Nkosi and her team visited the schools to give students the tools they need to do well in their lessons.

ERMELO – Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) visited numerous schools from January 14 to 22 to kick off the new academic year.

The visits was part of the Back-to-School Programme, which aims to build stronger ties between local government and schools.

Msukaligwa achieved an overall pass rate of 91.4% for the Class of 2025, ranking second in the Gert Sibande District and fourth in the province.

Ithafa Secondary School learners received 40 pairs of school shoes and 40 scientific calculators to help with their math work.

The school was also promised 50 study guides to help them improve on their 70% pass rate.

Umzimvelo Agricultural High School celebrated a 96.8% pass rate. Students here also received 40 pairs of shoes and 40 calculators.

Lake Chrissie Secondary School also received shoes and calculators to celebrate their 93% pass rate.

In addition to the Back-to-School Programme, the municipality teamed up with the district municipality and other stakeholders to give shoes to children at Davel Primary, Laerskool Davel, KwaDela Secondary School and Umfudlana Combined School.

Partners also donated laptops, books and feminine hygiene products.

To ensure the top learners can keep studying after high school, the mayor’s youth office collaborated with the private sector to assist seven learners from the Class of 2025 with tertiary learning registration fees.

“These initiatives demonstrate Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s ongoing commitment to creating functional learning environments, promoting equitable access to education and supporting learners across both urban and rural communities,” said Mandla Zwane, spokesperson for Msukaligwa Local Municipality.
