Ditch left open after fixing of burst pipe poses ‘serious hazard’

A PR councillor says the ditch was dug up during the fixing of a burst water pipe they had reported in February.

A DITCH that was reportedly dug up during the fixing of a burst pipe in Ward 21 about four months ago has been left open.

This has raised concerns, with local PR councillor Hlengiwe Shozi saying she had reported the burst pipe in Cumnor Gardens, Berkshire Downs.

Shozi said she views the open ditch as “a matter of public safety that has remained unresolved for almost four months”.

PR Councillor Hlengiwe Shozi near the area of concern she says has not been attended to for months.

“On 28 February, a burst water pipe was reported in Cumnor Gardens, Berkshire Downs. I was in the area at the time and immediately reported the fault, engaging with senior officials to ensure a prompt response. The repair work was carried out efficiently, and I commend the relevant department for attending to the burst pipe without delay.

“However, during the repair process, a ditch was excavated on the pavement, sidewalk and has never been properly closed or reinstated. Despite numerous reports and follow-ups, the ditch remains open.

“This poses a serious hazard to pedestrians, particularly children, elderly residents, and people using the sidewalk on a daily basis. The fact that it has been left unattended for nearly four months raises concerns about accountability and service delivery,” said Shozi.

The eThekwini Municipality said: “The relevant directorate has attempted to investigate the matter, however, they have been unable to locate a corresponding service request for the reported ditch.”
