PINETOWN Boys’ High School hosted its annual Old Boys’ Day on Saturday 14 May and more than 150 old boys registered during the morning, and were treated to some exciting rugby matches against St.Henry’s.
The day started off without a hitch as Pinetown’s U14s claimed a narrow 26 – 24 victory, followed by solid performances from the U16s which won 12 – 6, the 2nds claiming a 19 – 6 victory against their opposition. The Pinetown U15 side lost to St Henry’s 15 – 0.
The 1st XV game kicked off to a good start as dominated the physical confrontation from the whistle.
Centre, Sithe Mbatha, crossed the line for the first points of the match after the Pinetown forwards climbed into superb field positions to strike.
St. Henrys responded well after the first try of teh game, and shot at the hosts with wave after wave of attack.
Pinetown’s defences stood firm. Pinetown’s second try came minutes before half time. Flanker, Andile Nene, changed direction of his run 10m from the line and showed impressive strength as he carried a few defenders with him as he scored five points.
St Henry’s scored the first try of the second half as they crossed the line and left the game poised at 14 – 10, in Pinetown’s favour.
With roughly 10 minutes to play, Nkanyiso Nzimande, picked up a loose ball on the 22m and broke three or four tackles on his way to score under the poles, which scored Pinetown the 21 – 10 victory.
The Pinetown rugby sides won four of the five matches they played and the day ended with a function in Royals for the Old Boys’ and the St Henry’s staff.
