Pinetown shootout leaves one police reservist injured
Powell was rushed to Crompton Hospital where he was stabilised and has since been transferred to another hospital for further treatment.
Sunningdale police reservist and Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell was shot and injured following a high-speed chase that ended in a shootout on Old Main Road in Pinetown on Tuesday evening.
Members of the SAPS K9 unit as well as members of Marshall Security were in pursuit of a vehicle linked to various crime scenes in the greater Durban area.
According to Tammy Gove, spokesperson for Marshall Security the incident occurred at about 7pm.
“When the suspects realised they were being followed, a short chase ensued and the suspects opened fire on the pursuing officers. During the shootout, Tyron Powell the director of Marshall Security sustained gunshot injuries. Tyron was rushed to Crompton Hospital where he was stabilised and has since been transferred to another hospital for further treatment.
“The suspect armed with the rifle was shot on scene. Three suspects fled in their vehicle. Members from our Special Operations Team and SAPS tracked the suspects who then opened fire upon them and they returned fire, killing three additional suspects. Three handguns and an AR15 assault rifle were recovered at the scene. There are potentially further suspects outstanding,” Gove said.
