City wishes residents a safe and happy Diwali

The eThekwini Municipality urges residents to use only legal fireworks and to exercise caution during Diwali and other festive celebrations.

THE eThekwini Municipality wishes the Hindu community and all residents a joyous and safe Diwali. As families gather to celebrate the Festival of Lights on Sunday, the City urges residents to use only legal fireworks and to exercise caution during Diwali and other festive celebrations.

 The City enforces the Nuisances and Public Behaviour By-law, as well as the National Explosives Act and applicable fireworks regulations.

 In terms of the City’s by-laws, only approved consumer fireworks may be used at residential properties, and only on designated days and during specified times. For Diwali, fireworks may be discharged between sunset and midnight.

Anyone found contravening the by-law will be liable for a R2 500 fine.

 Residents are encouraged to keep a close eye on their pets and, where possible, to keep them safely indoors.

Animals are easily frightened by fireworks and may become distressed and try to escape.

 Safety tips for residents:

  • Ensure that children are supervised at all times when around fireworks;
  • Keep pets indoors in a safe room to minimise their exposure to loud noise;
  • Discharge fireworks only in safe, open outdoor areas, and never indoors;
  • Never hold lit fireworks in your hands, as this could result in severe injuries;
  • Never point fireworks at any person, animal, building or motor vehicle;
  • Use fireworks strictly in accordance with the instructions on the packaging;
  • Never discharge fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.

In the event of an emergency, residents can report fires to the Emergency Call Centre on 031 361 0000.
