31 Club celebrates Christmas in August

Support this charity fundraiser.

SUPPORT 31 Club’s Christmas in August Gala Dinner and Auction at The Elangeni Hotel (Ballroom) on Friday 30 August at 6pm.

The 31 Club was formed in 1962 by a group of women under the chairmanship of Norma Rattray (of Mala Mala fame). The principal aim of the Club is to raise funds for charities in KwaZulu-Natal. As the group consisted of 31 volunteers, the Club was named accordingly, and membership always remains at no more than 31. The 31 Club members work entirely in a voluntary capacity, and has served the community for 51 years. Approximately 98 per cent of funds raised are distributed to selected and monitored charities.

There are more than 100 loyal “sleeping members” who assist with the various functions, offering their time and expertise in the organisation and implementation of these fundraising events. All décor (and catering where possible) is done by the members of the Club, and each function sees a new and amazing theme come to life with great attention to detail and presentation.

The 31 Club supports a wide range of charities in and around Durban and will consider any requests for funds from a valid group or organisation. The youth, the elderly and dying, the physically challenged, animals and the environment are all supported by the Club’s fundraising activities. Last year 38 charities shared R490 000. At a time when many non-governmental organizations are receiving less and less from the government and overseas donors, this group of just 31 hard-working women is really making a difference to the lives of many in need.

However, the organisation relies on the generous support of businesses and private individuals to help them uplift the KwaZulu-Natal community.

The 31 Club has sourced 32 items for auction for its Gala Dinner and Auction, ranging from a Mini Cooper, to jewellery, art and golf lessons. An auction catalogue (sponsored by Norton Rose Attorneys) will be distributed to allow for pre-bidding by attendees or online viewing at www.31club.co.za/auctioncatalogue/
