Community takes a stand against crime

Pinetown SAPS members encouraged the community and other stakeholders to get involved in the fight against crime

MEMBERS of Pinetown SAPS took to the streets of Pinetown and surroundings on Saturday to urge people to report crime and stand against woman and child abuse.

This was a joint venture between Pinetown SAPS, CPFs, safer cities, social development, Open Door Crisis Centre and Movas hairstyle Salon.

W/O Muzi Maphumulo who led the operation said this was an awareness campaign to stand against woman and child abuse in honour of Women’s Month.

“We were not only focusing on abuse. We were also urging people to report crime in the area, to familiarise themselves with the CPF neighbourhood watches and street patrols and to work together with the police,” he said.

Treasurer of the CPF Shamitha Naidoo said members of the community, especially young people, should get involved with the CPFs to help the police and try to minimise crime in their areas.

Ward 18 PR councillor Nelly Nyanisa said anyone can report crime, be it a friends, a family member or a neighbour of the victim. Reports can be made anonymously.

“Criminals live in the community with people so they are known, we should not live in fear because of the thugs, they should be reported.

“Crime also affects the economy of the country as no one would would want to invest in a country where the rates of crime is so high.

This motor arcade had a positive influence as people welcomed the police and were able to ask questions and hoped that it could be an ongoing process so that they could feel safe and put their faith in police.
