Mystery noise plagues Ashley residents

Ashley residents have been plagued by an annoying noise for the past three months.

A consistent noise over the past three months has Ashley residents fed-up and anxious to find the source of the annoyance that is disrupting the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood.

Resident, Garth Katzoff, who reported the noise pollution to the Highway Mail, said the noise started approximately three months ago.

“It gets progressively louder and louder during the night. Last night (Wednesday 28 August) I was woken up by the noise at 2.30am. I had to close all the windows in my house to drown it out,” said Katzoff.

Katzoff said sheer frustration and desperation has driven him to try to locate the source of the sound, but despite driving all around the neighbourhood he had not met with any success.

“It sounds like a broken ventilator or cooling fan, it is extremely annoying and disruptive. I assume that it is coming from Hagart Road Industrial Park,” he said.

Another resident, Belinda Firbank, who lives on Victoria Road also complained about the noise.

“It sounds like a sub-station is about to explode. It is a very irritating sound,” said Firbank. Last week Highway Mail visited Mr Katzoff’s home and heard the noise first hand and approached Ward 18 councillor, Tim Brauteseth, for assistance.

Brauteseth said while he had not received any complaints about the noise, he would report the matter to the city health department and Metro Police. He encouraged residents who have experienced the noise to email him, as the complaints could help determine or pin point the origin of the noise.

Tim Brauteseth can be contacted via email at ward18@ethekwini.org.
