Pupils’ plant project wins silver
Two KwaDabeka pupils will represent their school at a national level at the Eskom Science expo.
TWO pupils from Phephile Primary School in KwaDabeka, Nelisiwe Ngcobo and Nokwethemba Mtshali won silver medals at the Eskom Science Expo held at UKZN.
Their iboza (ginger bush) project was a success and the Grade 6 pupils were chosen to compete at a national level in Johannesburg.
Nelisiwe said they chose to educate people about iboza as they have used it since they were very young.
“We know that it works as my mother gives it to me all the time when I’m sick. It helps with headaches, flu, fever, sore throat and stomach ache.
“Iboza can be found growing near rivers. You can even plant it in your garden or buy it from street vendors,” said Nelisiwe.
Phephile Primary School science teacher Sarojini Govender said she is very proud of her pupils.
“I have faith in the pupils I teach, they have lots of potential, but I did not expect us to do so well, especially as we do not have proper resources,” said Govender.
