THE Edgewood Campus Environmental Forum, which is part of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Conservancy, joined hands with St Benedict School’s environmental club to clean up a 400m stretch of the Umbilo River in Ashley on Saturday 21 September.

The clean-up was part of the International Coastal Clean-up 2013 campaign. The dull, cold weather didn’t deter the group of 18 from participating. They worked for 2.5 hours removing various industrial and mixed pollutants. Many things were found during the clean up such as plastic products and take-away containers and cigarette butts, A pregnancy test kit was also found.

A total of 25 bags of rubbish were collected. The aim of the team was to encourage communities to make an effort and take responsibility for their environments. There are hopes that next year a community-wide activity could be planned for a large scale clean up and if the community is environmentally conscious, then there should not be a need for a clean-up at all.
