The Ward 10 committee hosted its first public meeting last Wednesday.

THE Ward 10 committee hosted its first public meeting to introduce themselves to the residents in the area concerned.The event took place at the Kloof Civic Centre last Wednesday evening and it gave the Ward 10 committee the opportunity to introduce themselves to the Upper Highway residents in a more personal capacity and a brief overview of their portfolios.

According to Rick Crouch, the councillor for the Ward 10 area and the chairman of the Ward, the committee is comprised of members from varying political factions and its sole purpose is to provide help to the residents that fall under its jurisdiction.

Before the meeting was adjourned, Councillor Rick Crouch released a list of the current and completed projects in the Ward 10 area:

Willingdon Road substation:
An application has been made to AMAFA (the provincial heritage agency) for permission to demolish the existing building.

Civic Centre building:
It will not be going out to tender again and will be transferred and used by regional centres.

M13 resurfacing:
The driving layer is currently being laid and work will take place on Mondays to Thursday between 8.30am to 4pm during the next two months.

Crooked lane rehabilitation project:
The project has been completed and cost R2 354 390.13.

Stockville Road rehabilitation project:
Phase 1 has been completed and phase 2 is scheduled to begin this month.

Western aqueduct project:
Work on phase 2 will begin this month with 7km of 1400mm diameter piping being installed between Alverston and Ashley Drive in Gillitts. The cost of phase 2 is R158 million.

Jerome Drive pipeline project:
According to Crouch, St Mary’s Road will be closed for two more weeks. He said 70 per cent of the pipeline had been laid and the estimated completion date is 31 January 2014, and there is a chance it may be completed as early as 13 December this year. The cost of the contract is R9 234 000.

New distributor substation to service Oxford Supermarket:
A new distributor will be installed and will assist with splitting the medium voltage circuits and reduce the number of people affected in the event of a power outage. The cost of the project is R1 276 200 of which Oxford Market has contributed R176 717.83.
