Enjoy a fabulous morning for a positive cause
Support the Positive Periods High Tea fundraiser.
KEEN mountain bike enthusiasts and founders of the Positive Periods Project, Kerry Frizelle and Mary-Anne Greenland will be hosting a Positive Periods fundraising High Tea at Giba Gorge on Thursday, 14 November, from 8.30am to 11am.
The newly established campaign is working in partnership with a local NGO, We Are Durban and aims to create a positive image around the menstrual cycle in underprivileged schools where the menstrual cycle is often viewed negatively and has a stigma of shame and embarrassment attached to it. The overall aim of the project is threefold – provide sanitary wear; improve the toilet facilities so that the school girls have a safe and private place to change and dispose of their sanitary wear and provide information that will demystify and break the cycle of silence around the topic of menstrual cycle and improve the school girls’ and boys’ understanding of the female body and the menstrual cycle.
As a registered counselling psychologist and a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at UKZN, Kerry is fully aware of the psychological issues that can occur around this issue and research as shown than many girls miss out on days of school during their period due to lack of proper sanitary wear or even drop out of school due to embarrassing situations that have occurred like bleeding on their clothes.
“Girls who miss up to a week at a time of school, fall behind at school which can often lead to them dropping out. A girl who finishes school as a better chance at success,” said Kerry.
The pair recently completed the challenging 115km FedGroup Berg & Bush two day challenge on 19 and 20 October to raise funds and awareness for the project. They will be providing feedback from the ride and a brief presentation on the Positive Periods initiative at the High Tea morning.
Tickets for the fundraiser are R120 each (100 available) which includes a Goody Bag, guided MTB ride or walk around Giba Gorge, High Tea with light musical entertainment and a Raffle draw.
They are also currently looking for sponsorship of the High Tea costs, donations of products to put into the Goodie Bags, donations of bags for the Goodie Bags and donations of prizes for the Raffle.
“If we are able to have the cost of the tea covered we will be able to put R12,000 straight into the Positive Periods fund.We would really appreciate your support! ” said Kerry.
