RESIDENTS in Assagay have recently initiated a neighbourhood watch, Assagay COP.
According to Homer Michaelides, the secretary treasurer of the watch, the initiative involves visible community members patrolling in uniforms to deter criminals from operating in the area.
“All of the members are volunteers and community members. They patrol in marked vehicles and on foot.
”The volunteers take turns to patrol so that we have patrollers out 24 hours a day seven days a week,” said Michaelides.
“We have already received feedback from the community informing us that they feel much safer in their homes,” he said.
The watch is appealing to community members to join the initiative as volunteers or to donate funds or equipment.
“As a neighbourhood watch we do not confront the criminals. We operate by constantly staying in contact with the Hillcrest SAPS, SACANN and security companies. While patrolling we would alert these organisations of any suspicious activity that we come across,” said Michaelides.
