KEARSNEY College faced off against Michaelhouse in cricket, basketball, tennis and waterpolo at the weekend. In cricket, Kearsney 1st X1 scored 206/10 (J Tedder 49; L Smith 46), and Michaelhouse 1st X1 scored 171/6 (L Smith 3/31). The match drawn.
In basketball, Kearsney’s 1st team beat Michaelhouse 1st team 55-48. Kearsney hosted Michaelhouse, in what has turned out to be a competitive rivalry in which House is ahead on the basketball court. The first half saw the guests make the most of their shots, even with defenders playing in their faces. Kearsney was facing a humiliating defeat, but continued to grind away and play pressure defence and wear down their opposition.
The half time change saw Michaelhouse up 15 points and they looked to be in control of the match. However during the second half Kearsney mounted a comeback fight changing to a zone defence not allowing Michaelhouse to become comfortable or have any easy shots.
By the end of the third quarter it was obvious that Kearsney was gaining the ascendancy and had taken a ten-point lead early in the fourth quarter and refused to surrender it, closing off the game with a win.
In the U16 tournament at St John’s in Johannesburg: Kearsney beat St Andrew’s (Grahamstown) 32-15 in the plate quarter final. Kearsney also beat Enjabluweni (Swaziland) 27-9 in the plate semi-final, but lost to Michaelhouse 15-23 in the plate finals.
In tennis, Kearsney 1st team beat Michaelhouse 8-0, but lost to Michaelhouse 6-10 in waterpolo.
In canoeing news, a record number of Kearsney paddlers tackled the 120km Dusi Canoe Marathon last weekend. In rather low river conditions and extreme heat, the boys were given a real test of endurance. All 10 paddlers successfully completed the race. Rory McNeill and Stuart McCleave were the first Kearsney boat home and were placed second in the U16 category.
