Crushed engineer identified

A student civil engineer died on Inanda Road when a pneumatic roller drove over him.

A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD man, Justice Khathi, died on Wednesday 2 April after a pneumatic roller drove over him on Inanda Road, Hillcrest at approximately 5pm.
According to Derrick Banks, of ER24, paramedics responded to a construction site and discovered the man lying motionless under the heavy vehicle.
Paramedics crawled underneath the vehicle and determined that he was in a critical condition, as his vital signs were declining quickly. “The paramedics initiated a quick extraction of the patient. After he was rescued from underneath the vehicle the paramedics could not find any vital signs. They immediately intubated him and administered CPR. Despite their efforts, the paramedic were unable to revive the man and he was declared dead on scene,” said Banks.
Khathi sustained multiple internal injuries and crushed bones.
Martin and East, a civil engineering construction company, confirmed that he was a civil engineering student technician under its employment.
According to media reports, the incident occurred as Khathi was erecting a sign board to alert motorists of the road works. Lt France Mkhize, of the Hillcrest SAPS, confirmed that they would be investigating the incident, but thus far they have not been able to determine the cause. “At this point the evidence suggests that it was an accident,” said Mkhize.
VEMA paramedics were also on scene to offer their assistance.

The cause of the incident is still unknown. Local authorities were reportedly on scene, but the Highway Mail has been unable to get comment from the Hillcrest SAPS.
