Local students inspire hope

Little girls with life threatening illnesses were treated and made to feel like a queen for a day.

VARSITY College Westville and The Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga hosted a Queen for a Day event to pamper 15 young girls from the Reach for a Dream foundation on Thursday 3 April.

The young girls (aged 8 to 15 years), all of whom suffer from life threatening illnesses were treated and spoiled on the special day. “The aim of the day was to make them feel loved and special, while inspiring and encouraging hope in their lives, so that they can continue to fight their illness,” said Leigh Dixon, of Varsity College Westville.

After choosing a beautiful tutu and a pair of wings, the girls were escorted to a limo by debonair Varsity College volunteer students.

The limo transported them to The Oyster Box Hotel where the girls were treated to a delicious lunch and a modelling session with Miss Mamelodi Sundowns, Le Mari Smit.

Gift bags were also provided to the girls after they were crowned by Smit.

The event was organised by 16 volunteer students who are a part of the Varsity College community engagement programme committee, known as Varsity College Cares.

“Our students have such passionate hearts, as they donate a lot of their free time to plan and run the various programmes,” said Dixon.
