Dog killed in brutal attack

A Westville family is still coming to terms with the loss of its six-year-old daschund, Cleo, after it was killed by a pit bull recently.

A six-year-old daschund was killed by a roaming pit bull in Westville recently.

Iaian McCallum, owner of the daschund, Cleo said, the family was sitting on the balcony on the morning of the attack when they heard a scuffle and cries from one of their dogs.

“The owner of the pit bull was away and the gate to his property was left open, so the dog came wandering down our road. Our inquisitive daschund went to the fence to see and smell the dog and was yanked through the fence,” said McCallum.

He said Cleo somehow escaped and squeezed through the fence and entered the property again. The family rushed the dog to the nearest 24/7 vet and hoped she would be able to pull through.

“How she was able to make it back onto the property still astounds me as she had a broken neck and back. She had bite marks on her face, severe puncture wounds around her neck as well as a severed trachea,” said McCallum.

Cleo was humanely euthanised. Upon returning home from the vet, McCallum said he went to confront the pit bull’s owner but he was not there and left his business card with the man’s son.

“I told him what had happened and asked him to get his father to contact me as soon as he could to sort the matter out,” said McCallum. Two weeks went by with no response. “By chance, one day, I ran into him, and told him my story and gave him my card. But I have still not heard from him.

“You can’t put a price on our dog Cleo, and the price that she was to our family is priceless. Heaven forbid this happens to another dog, and with two schools in the area, what if the pit bull targets a child next?” asked McCallum.

Numerous attempts made by the Highway Mail to contact the pit bull’s owner were unsuccessful.
